We are Leah and Sydney Shankman, local Girl Scouts from Troop 11543.
We are working on our Silver Award. A Girl Scout Silver Award is a project that has a lasting impact in your community.
For our project we have been working with The Local 7, a restaurant located in Tucker GA.
Our goal is to help their customers #skipthestraw and hope to influence other restaurants in the area to do the same.
This means when you are seated at The Local 7 you will not receive a straw. A small gesture like this can keep hundreds of straws from going is our oceans.
Why skip the straw?
Every day Americans use 500 million plastic straws. Straws are a single use item which means once you use one they can't be used again. So a large percentage of those straws end up in our oceans. By not using a straw there is zero risk of another one ending up in the ocean. Did you know that by the year 2050 there will be more straws in the ocean than fish? When you skip the straw you can save our oceans. Just one tiny action can make a huge difference.
